An Evening with the Petrosky Family

I had the privilege of spending a warm Texas afternoon with the sweetest family of four at their quiet home in Wimberly. Tucked away in the quiet of the Hill Country, their property was buzzing with life – muddy little boots by the door, baskets full of their favorite toys, and sunlight peeking over the stunning gardens of their parents who live on the shared property.

They have two little boys, both bursting with energy and curiosity – the kind of kids who speak in giggles, and who greeted me from crouched positions on the front porch telling me they were "hiding". Honestly, these are my favorite kinds of sessions.

My number one priority as a photographer, whether at home or somewhere like a park, is that kiddos feel safe and comfortable with me. The advantage for in-home sessions is the level of comfort the kids already have. It makes my job far more observational. So as the boys played baseball with their dad on the porch, and showed me Buzz Lightyear and Woody - the shots just unfolded naturally.

From the moment I walked in, it wasn’t about poses or perfect smiles. It was about play. No pressure, no “say cheese,” just connection.

There’s something special about photographing kids in their own environment. They know where their favorite toy or book is. They know which corner of the couch is “theirs.” They get their water bottles exactly when they need them, and are just as excited to play in their sandbox or jump on the trampoline as they are any day. When they’re home—really home—they let you see them as they truly are. That’s the magic. Not just smiles, but stories. Not just pictures, but personality.

As we transitioned to the gardens, some of my favorite moments were just the boys excitedly pointing out which vegetables their "GG" had planted, and having the boys show me who could run faster.

Sometimes we think we need the perfectly styled outfits, the Pinterest-worthy location, or the kids to be on their absolute best behavior. But real life is what you’ll want to remember ten years from now. And the most sacred place to capture the e real? Right in the heart of it all. At home.

If you're wondering whether your lived-in living room or chaotic backyard is “good enough” for family photos—the answer is yes. More than yes. It’s perfect.

It's an honor to be invited into sacred spaces that people call home and document their moments exactly as they are. It's an honor to witness and preserve the laughter and wiggles and snack breaks. The sandboxes, tire swings, and dirty feet. It’s an honor to be invited into your world—to sit on your floor, chase your little ones through the yard, and witness the rhythms of your everyday life. There’s so much beauty in the in-between, and it brings me so much joy to help families see just how meaningful and magical their “right now” really is.
